The 5.25 is the top of the base to the bottom, it includes the thickness of the wood. They get one star for kindly sending other color samples, none of which I could use. When I said, well, I guess I'll have to return it, she let me know that I'd be paying for shipping to return AND the original shipping cost - both of which totalled nearly $30. Since the stand was only $40, it clearly wasn't worth returning. How convenient for them. They say this policy is clearly stated - fine.
